One very small industry that has suffered in the past few weeks is whoever was making those online Brexit countdown clocks. Poor guys, hopefully they found employment elsewhere. As 29th March disappears into the past, anyone looking to become resident abroad before Brexit can start dusting off those plans again. With the possibility of no deal also disappearing into the distance, whatever deal we end up with will almost inevitably come with a transition period, so we probably have at least two or three more years to gain official residency abroad.
That’s if you wish to retire in the EU without any kind of visa, of course, holiday homes and investment abroad remain completely unaffected – as they would be by no deal.
To hear some commentators, you might think that the world thinks that the British have gone a bit mad. Our experience is somewhat different, however, in our offices in Spain and Portugal, as well as London, and at the Your Overseas Home shows that we have been attending. There is still a lot of love and admiration for British people, and a warm welcome for home buyers.
And why not? At Smart we employ some of the world’s brightest and best, from Brazil to New Zealand and Greece, as well as many British people of course, and we certainly don’t associate them with the problems of their countries of birth.
So I hope no-one will be put off grabbing the amazing chance to buy a home abroad and move or retire to a healthy lifestyle in the sunshine. You now have a new window of opportunity to do so without any hassle whatsoever.
