There’s a small park near our office in Hammersmith, which some of us walk past each day without noticing the blue plaque on its wall. The plaque says that on that site, once a school, General Montgomery and his team planned the D Day invasions. He then presented them to General Eisenhower, Churchill and King George VI there in May 1944. We all know what happened next.
It’s a little humbling to think that the largest invasion in history was planned on our doorstep. It certainly puts our own worries about planning a move abroad into perspective!
But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t plan meticulously. General Montgomery was known, indeed was often criticised, for what was seen as excessive caution. But at Smart we don’t think that’s such a bad thing. Work out what you need to achieve, calculate the risks, reduce or remove the risks wherever you can, and then just get on with it.
If you would like to see the park, it’s St Paul’s Gardens on Hammersmith Road, and there are special commemorative events there to mark the 75th anniversary this weekend.
