I’ll admit that today’s title is meant ironically, but it is fascinating to see the change in the messaging at this election so far. The Conservative Party seems to have learnt its lesson from 2017, where it believed that the Labour Party was so hopeless under Jeremy Corbyn that it could tell the British public some hard truths and still win a huge majority. “There is no magic money tree”, as Theresa May told a nurse on TV, or easy answers to better social care and hence there would be a “dementia tax.”
Thinking about elections, it’s 11 years today since Barack Obama was elected president, and 39 years since Ronald Reagan, and you certainly can’t tell me that politicians are “all the same” or that voting doesn’t change anything.
Where will we be a year from now? In the US we could be facing either the most left-wing president in living memory, or Donald Trump entering a second term with even more braggadocio. Same with the UK, unless we just go on getting hung parliaments and elections until we all leave the country. Don’t forget that currently and continuing under a transition period until at least December 2020 you can still gain residency in the EU with all your current rights to live, work, retire, get free-ish healthcare and your pension uprated every year.
Personally I think there’s a lot to be said for the middle of the road, and that extends to your currency conversion too. Today’s rate, for example, is way above the average for 2019 and the past three years. You can lock it in with a forward contract and focus on your own plans for the next year.
