Following its steep slide following the interest rate decision last week (or more precisely, the more hawkish messages on inflation coming from the European Central Bank) sterling has been struggling to gain traction against the euro.
GBP/EUR remains around 1.5% down on the beginning of December but, it’s worth pointing out, still ahead of the five-year average.
With recession looming (or here already, no-one quite knows) and strikes seeming to be everywhere, against a background of the highest government borrowing ever, just announced, the mood music for sterling isn’t great, on this the shortest, darkest day of the year.
