The pound starts the summer very close to where it was against the euro on 1st June 2019, 2018 and 2017, and a long way short of where it was on 1st June 2016. After Brexit was “done” at the start of the year some of us may have hoped and expected that we were on course to a recovery to pre-referendum levels.
Instead of that the pound faces a sea of problems, with the tide going out on the economy and a no-deal Brexit on the horizon once again.
You might take inspiration this morning, however, from the woman whose face is on the front of all your sterling notes and coins. Today’s newspapers carry photos of the Queen out on her horse, riding around the grounds of Windsor Castle at the age of 94. One assumes she didn’t have to run around a field trying to catch the horse first, but it’s still an impressive achievement.
